In 2010, Shawnee was recognized by Money Magazine in its annual “Best Places To Live” survey, placing 17th in the United States ranking. Shawnee was recognized for its affordable housing, air quality index, and median commute time.
Two branches of the Johnson County Library serves the Shawnee Mission area. Shawnee Town 1929 Museum and Wonderscope Children’s Museum are located within the city.
In January 2015, 9-year-old Jeydan Distler penned a letter to her future self that was placed in the city of Shawnee’s time capsule.
It was buried on City Hall property not to be opened for fifty years. In the letter her wish was for her mom to become the first female mayor of Shawnee. Three months later, her mom, Michelle Distler, became the first female mayor of Shawnee, Kansas.
Michelle Distler was sworn in as Shawnee’s first female mayor in April 2015. The city has championed open government and economic development.
